Deacon Phyllis McHugh is a Certified Catechist and assists in the development of educational programs for adults and children. The program to become certified in this educational programming is intensive and includes three phases in the catechist certification process. In order to be certified, a candidate must complete the Theology phase, the Specialization phase and the Practicum phase. Phyllis is a wonderful addition to our KidsLife staff, along with her other duties within the parish of Saint Miriam.
Phyllis is also a native Philadelphian. She spent 10 years as a Catholic Sister with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Philadelphia. Phyllis met and married her husband of 31 years, Chris McHugh. She is the mother of one son, Christopher and the proud Grandmother of Christopher and Connor. Phyllis studied for a Masters Degree at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, where she majored in Systematic Theology and minored in Liturgy. She has been active in parish work which has carried over into her involvement at Saint Miriam. Phyllis is currently studying for the priesthood with the Old Catholic Church. She enjoys reading, playing the oboe and listening to music of all kinds. She is actively involved in liturgy and music at Saint Miriam. She was ordained to Deacon on April 18th 2010 at Saint Miriam by Archbishop Licata.
